The consonants can be pronounced similarly to what would be expected in English. There are, of course, differences as some of the sounds are not even used in English. However, trying to insert representations for them would make the writing unintelligible. Anyone who wants to find out how to pronounce the words correctly should get an audio tape of the mantras. Vowels in Tamil come in pairs with a short and long form. For pronunciation the short forms are represented by a single letter and the long forms by a pair as shown below.
